Fans of the cult series “Grey’s Anatomy“I have fibrillation. The actor is 71 years old James Pickens Jr. (who shows his face to Doctor Richard Webber) tells his personal story of being radically changed thanks to prevention. In fact he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The actor appeared on Friday November 14, in an Instagram video, where he said he was “living proof” that early detection of prostate cancer “works”. In an interview with “Black Health Matters,” Pickens said he always prioritizes his annual physical activity and noted that prostate cancer runs in his family. What an unintentional coincidence.
“My father had it. Like him, so did his brother. – says the actor. I would be surprised if I didn’t have it too. One of my cousins was also diagnosed, but he is now 90 years old and still alive. As far as I know, no one has died from it.”
In 2024, he said, his primary care doctor recommended he see a urologist after blood tests showed a high level of concern. A biopsy later showed a tumor, but a PET scan showed the cancer had not spread. He then underwent surgery to remove part of his prostate.
Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men, according to the American Cancer Society, as CNN reports, the risk is even higher in black men, as Pickens highlights in his video, adding that “early diagnosis is key.”
