First he was fifth, then third, now fifth again: Jordan Chiles still hasn’t won bronze in Paris. The American was disappointed.

More than a year after missing out on a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, Jordan Chiles has made serious allegations. The US gymnast initially moved up to third in the floor final. After a successful protest from the US team, their ranking was revised upwards. But a few days later, the IOC ruled that the objection was filed four seconds too late. The medal went to Ana Barbosu of Romania, Chiles was “only” fifth again.

In the podcast “Honey, it’s Keke Palmer,” Chiles reported on her experience following the decision – and spoke openly about racist hostility. “I didn’t see it that way at first until I started getting racist comments, almost literally. People were saying this and that – and some even wrote to me asking me to kill myself. It became very, very difficult,” said the 24-year-old.

The hateful reaction from internet users even caused him to withdraw from social media. “It’s hard to watch – as an athlete. And then you stand on the podium, yes, it’s an all-black podium, which is very rare. Obviously that’s something that a lot of people don’t like.” Chiles added: “They don’t want to see that. They don’t want to see three beautiful black women on that podium. They don’t want to see us dominate. And that really hits me.”
