Handball: SC Magdeburg remains perfect: 27:22 against HC Zagreb

Defending champion SC Magdeburg remain unbeaten in the Champions League. Against Croatian representative HC Zagreb, the Magdeburg team achieved its seventh victory in the seventh match with a time of 27:22 (10:9) in front of 6,098 spectators. The best SCM shooter was Sebastian Barthold with six goals.

Magdeburg Matej Mandic started in goal against his former club and made a good save. SCM struggled offensively – but still took an early lead. Coach Bennet Wiegert gave captain Christian O’Sullivan playing time in defense and relied on Philipp Weber rather than Felix Claar in attack. SCM needed to find its way into the game, but managed to take a three goal lead (8:5/19). However, before halftime Zagreb reduced the score to one goal.

Claar brings speed and early decisions

After the break, Magdeburg decided not to change specialists, bringing on Claar in attack instead of Weber and O’Sullivan in defence. This increased the pace of the attack and after a 4-0 scoreline, SCM increased their lead to five goals. After that, Magdeburg remained scoreless for five minutes Zagreb can be shortened significantly. Magdeburg’s Oscar Bergendahl was shown a red card after video evidence hit him in the face (42nd) – but Magdeburg easily secured the win.
