Kris Boyd, an American football player for the New York Jets, was shot in the heart of the American metropolis, in the very touristy Midtown (38th Street) district, at night from Saturday to Sunday. The 29 year old player is in critical condition. “While the number of shootings in our city has reached a historic low, we must continue to work to end gun violence, too many young people are tragically impacted by this epidemic,” said Mayor Eric Adams, who will hand over the reins on Jan. 1 to Zohran Mamdani.
I pray for New York Jets player Kris Boyd and his loved ones.
Even though shooting rates in our city are at historic lows, we must continue working to end gun violence. Too many young people’s lives have been tragically changed and cut short by this epidemic. https://t.co/q4wKkO8E3W

The incident allegedly occurred in front of the Sei Less restaurant, a restaurant that is very popular with celebrities and is known for its lively nights. According to witnesses interviewed by investigators, an argument occurred between several men before two shots were fired. Boyd was with a group of friends when tensions escalated, but there has been no indication that he was targeted. Hit in the stomach, he briefly lost consciousness before being rushed to hospital, where his condition was described as critical but stable.
When police arrived, chaos was still on the street. A BMW X6 reportedly fled immediately after the shooting, followed by a silver Mercedes-Maybach. Some people present refused to cooperate, complicating the investigation in the first hours, according to elements revealed by the New York Post. Photos taken after the perimeter was secured also show a Rhino GX (a high-end armored SUV) abandoned in front of the building.
Boyd has signed a contract in New York to relaunch
For Boyd, this drama comes at the end of an empty season. Arriving this summer after stints at Minnesota, Arizona and then Houston, the “defensive back,” considered more of a rotational player, has yet to wear the green uniform on the field. A shoulder injury, suffered during preparation, had sent him straight to the hospital. His one-year contract, worth $1.6 million according to Spotrac, allows him to relaunch his career. Boyd has earned more than eight million dollars in earnings since joining the NFL.
The Jets, who did not play this weekend following their loss to New England on Thursday, are monitoring his medical condition. Meanwhile, investigators continue to search the area filled with surveillance cameras, in hopes of identifying the shooter. As of Sunday afternoon, no suspects had been arrested.
The area where the shooting occurred is one of the most densely populated areas in Manhattan, just a few blocks from Times Square. Sei Less, a nighttime hangout, is a social gathering frequented by artists and athletes. Police have asked anyone with information to come forward as the investigation has only just begun.
