‘How many more deaths will it take before we stop the war?’ – Time

Berlin, November 16 (Adnkronos) – “The lives of individuals, societies, nations are full of stumbling blocks and tragedies, sometimes due to the choice of individuals, more often due to the deliberate actions of others. The First World War resulted in at least 16 million dead on land, half of them civilians, plus twenty million wounded and maimed. The Second World War, which extended to the Pacific Front, caused an estimated seventy million deaths. The toll, from country to country, was impressive. and it must always be remembered that numbers are not about the number of people. How is all this possible can happen and is expected to happen again? How many more deaths will it take before we stop viewing war as a tool to resolve disputes between countries, Sergio Mattarella, underscored this in Berlin in his speech to the Bundestag at the ‘National Day of Mourning’ ceremony, 80 years after the end of the Second World War?

“Nie wieder, never again, is the expression adopted in the international community to condemn the Jewish Holocaust – the Head of State recalled – Once again nie wieder is contrasted with wieder. This is what we are witnessing: war again, racism again, great inequality again, violence again, aggression again”.
