«I felt disgusted when I saw the banner supporting Cagnazzo»

Tensions are still rising around Angelo Vassallo’s murder trial. This is clear from the loud outburst expressed by Antonio Vassallo, son of the fishing mayor of Pollica, a few hours after the third pre-trial hearing held today in the Court of Salerno. Among the strongest parts of his story, the image of Lazzaro Cioffi, shown by the documents as a possible perpetrator of the murder, one of the suspects and currently the only one present in the courtroom: «Saw Lazzaro Cioffi in the courtroom, shown by the documents as a possible perpetrator of the murder of my father, a few meters from me, free, without handcuffs, because he was under house arrest. A powerful picture, which tells more than words about the horrors we have experienced and, unfortunately, continue to experience.”

Antonio’s posts also focus on what happens outside the Court, where family, friends and colleagues are located Carabinieri Colonel Fabio Cagnazzo, One of the five suspects unfurled a banner reading “Truth and Justice also for Fabio Cagnazzo”.

Their presence dismayed the mayor’s son: «Journalists present reported that among the protesters were military friends and colleagues. If this is the case, then it is even more serious: it means that someone, despite being a member of an institution that is supposed to defend the rule of law, chooses to publicly expose himself in the interests of a defendant who, in the courtroom, is talking about very serious, anomalous and completely opaque behavior.”

A scenario that complies Antonio Vassallo, this makes a path that has been marked by suffering, hope and obstacles for fifteen years even more difficult. His outburst ended with a passage that summed up all the frustrations accumulated over the years: «If I wore a uniform and truly believed in the values it represents, today I would be embarrassed to see certain scenes. What I felt was not anger, but disgust. Disgust for those who prefer to ignore the weight of documents, interceptions, omissions and irregularities reconstructed in fifteen years of investigations.”

Bitter words that once again capture the Vassallo family’s determination in seeking truth and justice.
