The best electric outdoor heater

Our expert chose the Tresko stove for its ease of assembly and operation. Also for the heat it provides in just a few minutes.

When the cold weather arrives, outdoor spaces take a back seat. Even those of those who have a terrace or patio at home. But this can be solved with a heater outdoor electric ones, very similar to those seen on bar terraces, but with designs and powers suitable for homes.

How we chose and tested the products

When the temperatures drop, I only use the two terraces I have at home to hang clothes. An option to use them in winter is to have outdoor electric heaters which can be an alternative to enjoy these spaces when the temperatures are colder. I used the models analyzed on both terraces, one of 3 m2 and another of approximately 6 m2. So the main features I would look for in a stove of this type would be the following:

  • Project: the materials used for its construction, its stability once positioned and its format (tower…), as well as its resistance to water or dust; something essential when dealing with external devices.
  • Performance: how much heat they give, how far and what dimensions they can cover.
  • Heat settings and options: Yes, they have different temperature settings and other options to suit different situations.
  • Others: from the length of the cable to the clarity of the instructions, whether it comes with accessories, etc.

Three powers: Tresko electric outdoor heater

the best electric outdoor heaters

Who is it for: for those looking for an effective electric stove.

Why we recommend it: This model is for placing on the wall (comes with mounting accessories and stand) and is quite simple to do so. I placed it on one of the terraces we have at home and it took us a few minutes to assemble it. It has a 1.45 meter cable, enough to connect it to a socket not too far away.

It has three power levels (750, 1,500 and 2,000W) and one of the things that surprised me the most is that it takes very little time to turn on and notice the heat. Furthermore, the infrared tubes do not dazzle at all.

I carried out the test on some days when the outside temperature did not exceed 12 degrees, so staying on the terrace without too much heat was not pleasant. Once in operation, we ate several days on the terrace since the sensation of heat (with medium power) was more than enough to feel comfortable without feeling cold at all.

I think the higher wattage offers too much heat if the space isn’t very large. Its operation is very simple and convenient thanks to the remote control to choose the power supply and turn it on or off. This last operation can also be carried out via a button on the side of the device. Another thing I liked is that it has an adjustable tilt angle, so you can move it in the direction you want very easily. In terms of safety, it has a protective stainless steel grille and is resistant to corrosion and water (IP65).

Its weak points: It can only be placed on the wall.

Technical data sheet
Measures: 63 x 16.5 x 10.5 centimetres.
Materials: aluminium, stainless steel, plastic.
Energy: up to 2,000W.
Others: remote control, tiltable, cable length 1.45 metres.

1.8 meters of cable: the Crea Patio Heater electric outdoor heater

the best electric outdoor heaters

Who is it for: for those looking for a beautiful and decorative stove.

Why we recommend it: It is the model with the highest price of all the stoves analyzed, but the most beautiful and the one that best ‘dresses’ the terrace. With a design that makes it look like a lamp, it was made with resistant and durable materials: its body is made of steel, the resistance is made of quartz and the lampshade is made of fireproof cord. It is an electric model that uses carbon infrared technology for heating.

According to the company, it heats up faster, more efficiently and naturally, distributing heat without unnecessarily heating the air and saving energy. It has three power levels: 900 W, 1200 W and 2100 W, with which it emits heat between 30° and 45° and can work in environments from 0° to 20°. Each of them is controlled via a switch located on the stove head.

On the test days I placed it on one of my terraces (where it is less sheltered and colder in winter) and I experimented with the three powers: the highest level heats too much and if the space is not very large it is even more noticeable. The medium power was ideal for me, even at night, because it emits a very pleasant heat without being overpowering at any time.

The length of the cable, 1.8 metres, seemed more than sufficient to connect it to the nearest socket located in the living room and without the need for an extension. Although it is waterproof (IP44 certified), we do not recommend using it when it rains to ensure there are no safety issues. In this sense it also logs out automatically.

Its weak points: the price is a little high

Technical data sheet
Measures: 45 x 60 x 210 centimetres.
Materials: steel and quartz.
Energy: up to 2,100W.
Others: Cable length 1.8 meters, IP44, infrared technology.

With carrying handle: Blumfeldt Heat Guru 360 electric outdoor heater

the best electric outdoor heaters

Who is it for: for those looking for a compact stove.

Why we recommend it: This stove model is the most compact of the entire comparison: 22 centimeters in diameter and 56 centimeters in length. With these measurements it can be placed anywhere without taking up much space. I placed it first on the smaller terrace. Equipped with a 1.8 meter long cable, it rotates 360 degrees and has two power levels: 600 or 1200 W.

At the time of testing I found the lowest setting to be more than sufficient as the terrace is small. The heat is directed directly to the body via infrared but is not uncomfortable at all.

I also tried it on the other terrace, a little larger, and in that case, positioning it a little further away, I tried the second level: it heats correctly as long as the temperatures are not extremely low (in this case the temperatures did not drop below 12 degrees). Despite being compact, it is stable, has an aluminum base and if it tips over it turns off automatically. To carry it easily, it has a handle at the top.

Its weak points: If temperatures are very low, the power decreases slightly.

Technical data sheet
Measures: 22 x 56 centimetres.
Materials: aluminum.
Energy: up to 1,200W
Others: Cable length 1.8 meters, infrared technology, two powers, IPX4.

Horizontal or vertical: Enders Florenz electric outdoor heater

the best electric outdoor heaters

Who is it for: for those looking for an easy-to-use stove.

Why we recommend it: Its operation is very simple: it is equipped with a button at the base of the stove to choose one of the two power levels (450 or 900 W) or to rotate it (up to 60 degrees). You can also place it in a horizontal or vertical position.

When I tried it it felt like a stove with little power in rather cold situations. I used it on the smaller terrace with a temperature below 12 degrees: I placed it close to my legs and although I felt the heat (at maximum), if I moved it a little further away the sensation of heat was barely perceptible.

The length of the cable is 1.55 meters, so it is necessary to have a relatively close plug so that it does not remain tense. On the larger terrace I also had to carry it close enough to me to feel the heat and be moderately comfortable. It also has a carrying handle and anti-tip function to always ensure safety. It also has IP24 certification and is resistant to splashes of water.

Its weak points: It doesn’t get too hot if the temperatures are very low.

Technical data sheet
Measures: 77.5 x 32 x 77.5 centimetres.
Materials: plastic and aluminum.
Energy: up to 900W.
Others: Cable length 1.55 metres, two powers, IP24, weight 3 kilos.

Frequently asked questions about electric patio heaters

What type of heat do these stoves generate?

Most work with short-wave or medium-wave infrared, which heats people and objects directly, not the air. This is ideal for outdoors, as wind or drafts don’t affect the perceived heat as much.

Are electric outdoor heaters safe?

Yes, if used correctly. They usually come with overheat protection, anti-tip systems, IP (water/dust resistance) certifications, and cool-touch housings on some models. However, it is important to maintain a safe distance and avoid direct contact with water or flammable materials.

What maintenance does an electric outdoor heater need?

Very little. Simply clean the surface and the grills from dust or dirt, check that the cable and plug are in good condition and do not use abrasive products or direct pressurized water.
