At least eight people died and nineteen others were injured in a car explosion on Monday, November 10, in the heart of the Indian capital, New Delhi’s deputy fire chief told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Citing authorities at a hospital near the blast site, the deputy fire chief said so far “eight people died and nineteen were injured”.
Currently, the police have not provided details about the cause of the explosion but reported that anti-terrorism agencies had been deployed to the scene.
The blast occurred in the afternoon as residents were returning from work, near a metro station located near the famous Red Fort in old Delhi.
At least six cars were engulfed in flames, as well as several motorized taxis called pedicabs. “A low-speed vehicle stopped at a red light – there was an explosion inside the vehicle, and as a result of the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged.”New Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told the press.
Red Fort, dating from the 17th centurye century, is one of the symbolic sites of the country. His image adorns banknotes and it is from the fort that prime ministers address the country on Independence Day.
