Nothing happens like anywhere else in Nice. Although many French cities restrict the presence of cars in their city centers, one of the most beautiful places in the Riviera city, which is very popular with walkers, running fans and cyclists, for its spectacular panorama, will do the opposite. Until now there was one-way traffic, Quai des Études and Quai Lunel, located on the seafront east of the Promenade des Anglais to the harbour, will soon see the return of two-way traffic. At least that’s what an administrative appeals court just decided. Epilogue to a long court battle.
The Harbor District and Neighborhood Defense Committee has appealed against the establishment of a one-way road and the development of a wide bicycle lane on the road, which was decided by the city government during the Covid-19 crisis.
Disgruntled ecologists and cyclists
“This decision is the result of the State’s refusal to reduce the special status of the Promenade des Anglais as a road intended for extraordinary and very large convoy traffic,” reacted Christian Estrosi (Horizons) who has been calling it quits for years to change the status of the famous road.
Starting this Monday, November 24, approximately two kilometers of work will be carried out at night to allow the return of motorized vehicles on the divide (west-east direction) and eliminate the giant bicycle lane for which there is no space. If some motorists and traders were happy, political opponents such as Éric Ciotti (UDR), on the contrary, were furious, such as representatives of environmental activists and cycling associations. One thing is certain: pedestrians and bicycles, which are usually comfortable, will have to be tightened up a bit.
