At least one person died on Saturday, November 15, in Albufeira, a tourist town in southern Portugal, due to strong winds that swept through the Algarve region, according to official sources quoted by Agence France-Presse (AFP). The region has been placed on orange alert in the face of Hurricane Claudia which has been battering the country for several days.
In a short statement, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made his statement “solidarity with the families of the victims, following the passing of tropical depression Claudia which hit Albufeira this morning”.
Civil protection had previously reported on its social networks that strong winds had caused this “two injured and one person missing” at the campsite in Albufeira. According to local media, the deceased person may have been the person first reported missing. Next, at a restaurant in a seaside resort near Albufeira, “Partial roof collapse (…) leaving 20 people injured »also indicates civil protection.
Two deaths on Thursday
Several districts in southern Portugal were placed on orange alert this Saturday due to the bad weather that has hit the country for several days. An elderly couple was found dead in their home near Lisbon on Thursday, following flooding caused by heavy rain the previous night.
Portugal’s civil protection said on Saturday morning that it had recorded more than 3,300 incidents since Wednesday, mainly flooding and fallen trees across Portuguese territory, due to the impact of tropical storm Claudia.
