In the Netherlands, those responsible for a website selling synthetic drugs will soon be tried over the deaths of at least 45 people

At least forty-five people are believed to have died after purchasing illegal synthetic products and drugs from the Dutch online site Funcaps. And it will just be “tip of the iceberg”explained, Monday, November 17, the public prosecutor during the preliminary hearing of the lawsuit filed against the two owners of the online shop which was founded in 2016 in Zwolle, northern Netherlands. This is the first time in the country’s legal history that these products, also known as “new psychoactive substances,” have been suspected of causing death.

Jordy van W. and Stefan P., two men in their thirties, were arrested in August and placed in pre-trial detention for their trial, which will be held in February 2026. On Monday, before a court called to decide on their continued detention, prosecutors arraigned them “trading in human misery”. They are said to have made millions from their shops, supposedly for the purpose of providing a living “as simple as possible” their customers the means to find “more euphoria, energy, relaxation, fun and color”. All without a permit, for a substance considered potentially fatal. The defendants risk being sentenced to fifteen to thirty years in prison.
