MADRID (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Inter’s unbeaten season in the Champions League is over. After a derby loss against Milan in the championship, Chivu’s side were beaten 2–1 at the Metropolitano by Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, who scored the winner through Gimenez in the 93rd minute, in response to Zielinski’s momentary equaliser, after the home team’s early lead, signed by Alvarez. A mockery for the Nerazzurri who remain on 12 points at the top of the group with PSG, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, only behind leaders Arsenal (15). The long trail of regret is accompanied by the many opportunities created by Bonny and his friends. In fact, the first opportunity belonged to Inter. In the 3rd minute, Dimarco had a double chance, first trying a free kick from the right (the ball was blocked by Musso) then a low shot from a tight angle which ended up going wide. However, at the first real chance, Atletico got through. In the 9th minute, Giuliano Simeone’s cross from the right, slightly deflected, produced a carrom in the penalty area that supported Alvarez’s winning touch on goal. Referee Letexier initially ruled out the score at 1-0 for an alleged touch of Baena’s arm on a rebound with Carlos Augusto, but VAR overruled it and on the monitor the referee chose to validate what was the tenth goal in fourteen European appearances for the Argentine striker’s colchoneros.
Even in the second half, Inter performed better. Bastoni caught Barella’s pass into the penalty area who did everything right, but was unlucky: a perfect connection and a lob shot that hit the crossbar. In the 50th minute another chance: Lautaro responded to Dimarco’s cut ball to the left which was blocked by Musso on his way out. More precisely, it was Zielinski who in the 54th minute exchanged with Bonny and faced the former Udinese goalkeeper, overcoming him with a precise right-footed kick. In the last twenty minutes Simeone brought in heavy artillery along with Sorloth and Griezmann. However, it was centre-back Gimenez who made it 2-1, who, fully recovered, after receiving a corner, jumped higher than anyone else and beat Sommer with his head. For Inter, this is a painful misstep considering the big games next up: Liverpool (9 December) and Arsenal (20 January) at home, then Borussia Dortmund (28 January) away.
