Internal security: Federal police briefly tightened control at train stations

Federal police want to set the focus of this weekend’s operation with tighter controls at some 40 train stations across the country. Dobrindt said it was very important for him to introduce so-called Tasers throughout the federal police force. A Taser can be used to deliver an electric shock at close range, which usually paralyzes a person. The Bundestag passed changes to the law in October, stating that federal law enforcement officers can also use “remote electrical impulse devices” – in addition to regular batons and firearms.

More than 11,000 people were screened at train stations in October

Regarding video surveillance, Dobrindt said the number of suspects identified has tripled in recent years. That’s why he wants to expand the use of surveillance cameras and equip other train stations.

During the last major inspection in October, officials screened more than 11,000 people at 36 train stations across the country. They then initiated more than 230 criminal and administrative offense proceedings. The police consider this a success. Among other things, 60 proceedings have been initiated for violent crimes and 20 cases for violations of weapons laws. Officers also executed 23 arrest warrants during the investigation.
