Clara Luciani, singer-songwriter, continues her Zénith tour across France with her latest album, My blood. 8pm guest Léa Salamé. news, Tuesday 11 November on France 2, the singer recalls the success he has experienced in recent years, especially thanks to his cult title Granada.
Léa Salamé: “Popular” is not a bad word for you. You are a singer who unites all social classes, all age groups. You say to yourself: “My audience is like a board game, from 7 to 77 years old.” How would you explain this specificity?
Clara Luciani: I am very lucky, because my greatest desire has always been to touch as many hearts as possible. This is probably because there is a certain universality in my texts, everyone recognizes himself, from the smallest to the greatest.
Do you feel that today we want to gather at a concert, all generations combined? That nowadays there is a need for people to relax and dance?
More than ever, I think we need communion, at a time when I have the impression that the world is becoming increasingly individualistic. It’s true that I feel increasingly crazy, this magical moment every time people start singing in unison. And yes, I think we need to unite. Maybe that’s also why people really like watching football matches. There was something slightly magical that happened when we finally truly found ourselves together.
Five or six years ago, you said in “Elle” magazine: “I come from a working family. My mother was a nanny and every evening, when she came home, she expressed her satisfaction at being able to help others. Compared to that, my job seemed like a breeze to me.” Would you still say that today?
Two things have happened since this quote. With the song Granadamany women have written to me to thank me for reading the second reading of this song. Women who suffer from breast cancer and use this song to give themselves courage. It has cured me for once. Then I also have the opportunity to invest a little, using my speaking time for less distracting things. I had the opportunity, for example, to work a lot with Maison des femmes de Marseille-Provence, UNICEF and I think that gives a little meaning to my music too.
It’s rare for a big hit to become a cult hit. It has become a feminist anthem. We hear it in women’s demonstrations. It really is an important song.
It’s an important song and I think I’m very lucky, again. I don’t really like that word, but my hit song, I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it because I believe it’s an important song and I’ll always enjoy singing it because it’s not a song that says: “Oh my darling, I love you, you’re gone, when will you come back?” It’s a song that’s a little beyond my capabilities and, I’m sure, will always come in handy.
“Mon sang”, the third album you released a year ago, right after the birth of your son. Now you take it on tour. Isn’t that too difficult?
I guess it depends on the tour, darling. I was very well supported. It was great to experience this with him, who is not impressed by wide open spaces and who is taking his first steps in the Zénith. This is an extraordinary story.
You said: “Being a mother has reconciled me with my many failures and mistakes.” Which one?
The list is too long for this interview, I think, but I’m sure he made it up to me. I learned to make peace with myself, to love myself more. I am so proud to have created him, this little individual, that I forgive myself for many other things.
You are 33 years old, you say that longevity is your obsession. What for ? Are you afraid that one day someone will say to you: “Clara Luciani is over, your time has passed, thank you, goodbye”?
When dreams come true, we are always afraid to wake up. There’s that and there’s also the reality of music today. It’s getting harder to keep going because we consume music in a very different way to streaming, and I get the impression that it’s getting harder to settle in as time goes on, but it’s still my biggest dream. Not to do more, to always do better, but to be there and always earn a living from my work because that is the most beautiful thing in my life.
And when will the fourth album be released?
I don’t have specific dates, but by the end of the tour I think I’ll be seriously considering it.
At the moment, you are not writing?
Not too much. Because I think I need a little calm and introspection and then, it’s really time to party and I want to enjoy the last tour dates which are going to be really fun, so I don’t put too much pressure on myself.
