“Irresponsibility weakens the UN.” Warning of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarellapresent in his speech at the UN Viennawhich coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Convention against transnational organized crime, adopted in Palermo in December 2000 and today ratified by 190 countries. “The UN can fulfill its mandate as a guarantor of international peace only if its member states allow it. However, despite these limitations, the UN remains an extraordinary and irreplaceable instrument of peace and stability, so it cannot be justified if it is weakened.”
The United Nations «has been the protagonist of decisive progress, from decolonization to support for the social and economic development of billions of people, from interventions to maintain peace to the defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms – continues Mattarella -. Today the UN continues to be a fundamental frame of reference for addressing challenges that transcend national borders: the promotion of a common agenda for the preservation of our planet, the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, the protection of global health, and much more.
