Jan Delay – now he has a very special title

Jan Delay always wears a hat on stage – but not just any hat. Now the Hamburg musician has received a special honor for that.
It’s hard to imagine Jan Delay without a hat and sunglasses – accessories are as much a part of the Hamburg musician as his funk and soul sound. Here’s why the 48-year-old was honored: the German Hat Shop Association (GDH) named him “Hatwearer of the Year 2025.”
According to its own statement, the association awards “stylish artists who managed to write the history of German music with a socio-political stance.”
Anyone who sees the Hamburg native on stage will always see him wearing a hat. “That’s where I’m special,” admitted the musician whose real name is Jan Philipp Eißfeldt. When performing live, he wears an elegant performer’s suit size 59. His trademark: the felt hat is always placed slightly askew, the brim is folded – and the color palette is varied.
Over the years, hat associations have given this award to figures who have a special preference for hats, hats, or caps. Before Jan Delay, Torsten Sträter, Max Mutzke, Horst Lichter, Johannes Oerding, Jan Josef Liefers and Roger Cicero held the title.
