Amid discussions about Japan’s often very long working hours, the head of the new government Sanae Takaichi explaining that he currently “usually only gets about two hours of sleep.”
“Four hours maximum,” the first woman to lead Japan’s government told a parliamentary committee on Thursday.
He revived the discussion about work hours when he recently scheduled his office team meeting for the morning at 3 am.
Takaichi spoke before a parliamentary committee about the extremely long working hours in his country. The head of the conservative government took office last month. He announced that he would “abolish the term ‘work-life balance’ for myself. I will work, work, work, work and work.”
Japan is known for its long working hours, and many employees say they are under a lot of pressure at the office. There is even a term for people who die from overwork, namely “Karoshi”.
