Can you be a big tech boss and not be personally involved in artificial intelligence (AI)? For Jeff Bezos, the answer appears to be no. The Amazon founder has launched a start-up called Prometheus, announced New York TimesMonday 17 November, citing sources close to the matter.
The new company will receive funding of 6.2 billion dollars (5.3 billion euros), contributed in particular by Bezos, who will become co-CEO, according to the American daily. The company has been founded and recruited 100 people, mainly at OpenAI, Google, and Meta. However, the entrepreneur has not revealed his whereabouts so far, considering his policy towards the space company Blue Origin in its early days.
Mr. Bezos joins Mark Zuckerberg, who took over Meta’s AI strategy before the summer, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who returned to the company to help the research team, or even Elon Musk, who launched his startup xAI… Jeff Bezos relinquished operational control of Amazon in 2021, but remains a shareholder and is also dedicated to various projects, including Blue Origin, which recently successfully carried out the first flight of its large reusable rocket, New Glenn.
