Blue Moon in Kentucky is an unpublished short novel by Jim Harrison (1937-2016), discovered in 2023 by its French translator, Brice Matthieussent, in the author’s archives held at Grand Valley University (Michigan). Among the three hundred boxes were forgotten and undated manuscripts. Harrison probably wrote it, in the late 1970s, for a still-unanswered film project. This publication is the first in the world, the text has not yet been published in English, and the translation into French is the work of Héros-Limite, an extraordinary Swiss publishing house specializing in poetry.
For admirers of Jim Harrison, such a discovery is quite intriguing, and they will not be disappointed. This novella – a piece of fiction halfway between a novel and a short story – condenses the author’s art Autumn legend (ed. Robert Laffont, 1981) andAmerican Odyssey (Flammarion, 2009). We find gripping storylines, brash and sensitive language, sharp observations, and lively dialogue that can be heard like the plot of a film.
