Changes in the engine room Junts for Catalunya. Carles Puigdemont and the party leadership have decided to appoint MP Salvador Vergés as the new spokesperson in the Parliament of Catalonia. The appointment implies the replacement of Albert Batet as a visible figure in the formation of the Catalan Chamber, who begins to occupy a newly created position: deputy to the presidency. Deputy Mònica Sales, who acted as spokesperson, will have the task of chairing the parliamentary group.
Junts announced its restructuring on Monday and the gesture involves the reconstruction of the organization chart of the command and the multiplication of the power of Vergès, deputy of Girona, like Puigdemont, with roots in the rural environment and who has a good connection with the mayors and municipal officials of the party.
Junts, for his part, places the gesture at a key moment given the prospects of Carles Puigdemont’s return to Catalonia. “Given the new challenges of the political context and the report of the Attorney General of the European Union which validates the amnesty law”, Junts justified himself in a statement, alluding to the recent report of the European Justice which does not oppose the judicial pardon of the people involved in the judicial files derived from the trial. An approval, underlines Junts, which makes Puigdemont’s return “possible”.
The changes, as reported by Junts, were agreed unanimously after an executive management meeting this Monday in Waterloo (Belgium). Batet will continue to hold the position of deputy and he will have liaison functions between Junts and the institutions, as well as with representatives of the business world.
