The Hongqi Bridge in southwest China was intended to be an important link to Tibet. Now it’s in ruins – just ten months after its opening.
A portion of the Hongqi Bridge collapsed in China’s Sichuan province on Tuesday. According to authorities, no one was injured. The 758-meter-long bridge only opened in January and connects the national highway between the heart of China and the autonomous region of Tibet. Videos circulating on social networks show the moment of collapse: a mass of earth fell onto the bridge, and soon part of the building collapsed.
As reported by the Reuters news agency, citing authorities, the bridge was closed to traffic on Monday. Officials have noted cracks and soil movement on the slopes around the building. The construction company responsible has so far remained silent about the exact cause of the accident.
