Last Tuesday, the Superior Court of Antioquia convicted Santiago Uribe Vélez, brother of former president Álvaro Uribe, of paramilitarism. In a second degree sentence, the magistrates condemned the entrepreneur and breeder from Antioquia for the crimes of aggravated criminal conspiracy, for the formation of the paramilitary group Los 12 Apostoli, and of aggravated murder, for the murder of Camilo Barrientos. Former President Uribe regretted the judicial decision, for which his brother received a sentence of 28 years and 3 months in prison, in his story X: “I feel deep pain at the sentence against my brother. God help us.”
The ruling published Tuesday morning contains two main conclusions. The first revokes the acquittal sentence of November 13, 2024, when the First Criminal Judge of the Specialized Circuit of Antioquia acquitted Santiago Uribe of the two crimes. The second, to declare him “criminally responsible” for crimes against humanity. Furthermore, the magistrates have ordered that the arrest warrant be issued immediately after the Supreme Court of Justice has decided the extraordinary appeal to cassation.
