Ukraine will import gas from Greece to weather the winter, Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday, as the country’s energy installations suffered a new massive attack. In October, Moscow carried out its largest bombing campaign against Ukrainian gas sites since the invasion began in 2022, disrupting nearly 60% of national production.
“We have prepared an agreement with Greece regarding gas supplies to Ukraine”the president said on social networks. Kyiv has also secured nearly 2 billion euros in financing for its imports, which came from the Ukrainian government, European banks that received guarantees from the European Commission, Ukrainian and Norwegian banks.
In addition to his partners in Europe and America, Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that he is working “active with Azerbaijan” to complete long-term gas import contracts. These remarks came at the start of the Ukrainian President’s European tour, which started in Greece and is scheduled to pass through France and Spain.
Last winter, Russian attacks halved Ukraine’s gas production. Since the fall of 2022, systematic attacks on the energy grid have led to widespread power outages, regularly leaving millions of Ukrainians in the dark and cold.
