Costa summons several G20 leaders, including Sánchez, to talk about Ukraine’s future
The President of the European Council, António Costa, this Saturday summoned 12 leaders of the G20 countries, which is holding a summit in South Africa, to a meeting to discuss the future of Ukraine, according to official sources, after learning the details of the White House proposal to end the war.
“As you know, intense diplomatic efforts are being carried out around the peace plan for Ukraine, on the sidelines of the G-20 meeting,” the source said, adding that Costa today invited “like-minded leaders” present at the summit “to a meeting to discuss the way forward in Ukraine”. The invited countries are Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, Canada, Japan, Australia, Finland, Ireland and the Netherlands.
The meeting will take place this afternoon on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Johannesburg, where leaders will address the global challenges of trade, debt, development, geopolitics and energy transition over the weekend.
Trump’s 28-point plan, leaked to the American media, includes red lines for Kiev, such as reducing the army to a maximum of 600,000 soldiers or transferring to Russia territories that have not been militarily conquered by Moscow.
Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday that any peace plan for this country must involve Kiev. Both European leaders also had a meeting on Friday with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and this morning with the French President, Emmanuel Macron. (EFE)
