«Launched at a Russian military facility, this is a historic event»

Ukraine’s military said on Tuesday that it struck military targets in Russia with Atams missiles provided by the United States, calling it a “significant innovation”. Ukraine has never previously publicly said it would use advanced US-supplied ballistic missile systems against targets on Russian territory, although such restrictions were lifted by the Biden administration a year ago. “The use of long-range strike capabilities, including systems such as Atacms, will continue,” the military general staff said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Atacms missile, has been in Kiev since 2023 but has never been launched against Russia

Kiev received the system in 2023, but will initially only be able to use it on its own territory, about a fifth of which is occupied by Moscow. Joe Biden, the US president at the time, lifted these restrictions in November 2024, a move initially criticized by his successor Donald Trump. Ukraine has now requested i Tomahawk missile US-made with a range of 2,500 km (1,550 miles), explaining that this will help Russia reach the negotiating table.

Although Trump initially planned to sell it to Kiev, Trump said in November that he was “not considering” this move.
