Lawmakers voted to make maternity leave two months long

Solutions to the declining birth rate, measures of equality between women and men, steps to improve the welfare of babies, prevention of postpartum depression… These are the things that, among other things, came to the fore at the National Assembly session, Wednesday 12 November, during the examination of the Social Security Financing Bill (PLFSS), the establishment of new maternity leave. Article 42, which provides for its creation, was adopted, on first reading, with 288 votes in favor and 15 against. Instead, the deputies did not have time to complete the examination of the entire text, so it entered the Senate without having to go to a vote.

At this stage of the parliamentary elections, with the outcome so uncertain, it is hoped that parents will be able to take all or part of this maternity leave, the duration of which is set at two months each, within nine months of giving birth. The amount of the new allowance will be determined by a decision of the State Council, but the government has indicated that the allowance will be 70% of the net salary in the first month and 60% in the second month. The system is in addition to maternity leave and paternity leave, and will initially be implemented alongside parental leave, which can be taken until the child is 3 years old, but its low wages (around 400 euros) are a barrier for families. The cost of these measures is estimated at 600 million euros “at the end of the load increase”said Health Minister Stéphanie Rist on Wednesday evening.
