A select group of scientists, philosophers, jurists and activists gathered last week at Asilomar, a former YWCA camp near Monterey, California, that for some reason has become the epicenter of ethical debates about science. Just 50 years ago, the rustic structures of Asilomar hosted a scientific summit to regulate the then nascent discipline of genetic engineering. This time the topic is “mini brains”, that is minibrainsgenerated in the laboratory starting from stem cells and from an increasingly sophisticated knowledge of developmental biology.
