Luana D’Orazio, maintenance technician was relieved. The young woman died at the age of 22 at work

Mario Cusimano, a maintenance worker who was ultimately tried for the death Luana D’Orazioacquitted by the Prato Court with the formulation “because he did not commit a criminal act”. This decision was taken at the end of the first instance decision led by judge Jacopo Santinelli. Cusimano, external technician of the Montemurlo textile company where the 22 year old young worker lost his life on May 3, 2021 after being dragged into a warping machine, he was accused of involuntary manslaughter and voluntarily gave up the machine’s safety protection.

Prosecutor’s request

Public prosecutor Vincenzo Nitti had asked for a sentence of 2 years and 8 months, but the judge fully accepted the defense which stated that Cusimano had no role in destroying the accident prevention device.

In a normal trial, the man remained the only defendant, as the two owners of the company, Daniele Faggi and Luana Coppini, had chosen a plea, getting sentences of one and a half and two years respectively.

Luana’s mother’s reaction

The reaction of Emma Marrazzo, the mother of the young worker, was harsh, as she defined Luana as a “symbol of injustice” and expressed deep regret for an outcome that she believes does not fully represent the gravity of the issue. The prosecutor’s office is now waiting for the reasons for the sentence to evaluate the possibility of an appeal.
