“Manga, what an art! »: from the 18th century to the present, the Guimet museum tells you the history of Japanese drawing

This Wednesday morning, on the first day of the opening of the exhibition “Manga, all an art!” » in the Guimet museum (16th century Paris), the first children to enter the room opened eyes as big as Candy’s. “Ah, he’s the one in the story,” said a schoolboy in front of an old picture showing a Goku-like character and his monkey tail. Not far away, Dragon Ball. Finally, the original: the crystal ball statue presented by the Shogun to Napoleon III, the origin of the treasure hunt in the animated version that everyone knows: “Dragon Ball”.

Children get excited and lose their own code in the first room of the exhibition where the great cultures of the 16th, 17th or 18th centuries and their contemporary heroes mingle. “This exhibition will tell young viewers where manga comes from, and explain to museum visitors who don’t know it well, that manga is not so bad! », smiles Didier Pasamonik, comic book expert and one of the two curators of the exhibition.
