“Many tears flowed”: overwhelming emotions from the captain of Haiti who qualified for the 2026 World Cup

An extraordinary performance. Fifty-two years after its first participation in the World Cup in West Germany, the Haitian team sealed its ticket to the 2026 World Cup on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday thanks to its success (2-0) against Nicaragua, combined with Honduras’ draw in Costa Rica (0-0). Although Haiti currently lives in a very tense climate with clashes between armed gangs and local police, this qualification was greeted with excitement in one of the poorest countries in the Americas. At the age of 37, Johny Placide, team captain and Bastia goalkeeper (Left 2), reveals his emotions and tells the behind-the-scenes story of this exploit.
