Election in March 2026
The Hessian FDP wants at least six percent in local elections
The official signal for the start of the election campaign will be given on Saturday at the party conference in Wetzlar. FDP also has its posters up there – the colors of which are meant to stand out in the dreary winter months.
The Hessian FDP is targeting a state result of at least six percent in the upcoming local elections in March 2026. The aim is to maintain six percent, said FDP state chairman Thorsten Lieb in Wiesbaden. This is “not a utopia” because this party is represented by committed local figures. In the recent local elections in 2021, the Liberal Party achieved a national result of 6.7 percent, compared to 6.4 percent in 2016. The Hessian FDP is looking to revive local election campaign enthusiasm at its party conference on Saturday in Wetzlar.
The FDP proposes a redistribution of tax revenues
One of the FDP’s main demands is to strengthen regional financial strength, as Lieb explained. This must be done through redistribution of tax revenues, for example from income tax. With that money, cities and communities can decide on their investments more freely than if they had to apply for state funding for specific projects, Lieb explained.
For a leaner government, the FDP proposes reducing the number of districts in Hesse – from the current 21 to around 10. According to Lieb, regional councils should be abolished.
Stand out with its deep yellow color in the boring winter weather
In the upcoming local election campaign, the Liberals are focusing, among other things, on housing and education issues. The slogan “This is what matters” should make it clear to society that important matters are decided at the local level, said FDP Secretary General Alexander Müller. The main elements of the poster are city signs, the important color of which is rich yellow – this is intended to increase visibility in the winter election campaign.
