Affection after a cup win
The DFB awarded Woltemade with the Fair Play Medal
National player Nick Woltemade was honored by the German Football Association. It’s about the action after the DFB Cup final.
The German Football Association (DFB) has awarded national striker Nick Woltemade with a fair play medal. The 23-year-old received an award for his behavior following last May’s DFB Cup final, which he won with VfB Stuttgart. The Bundesliga team won 4-2 against then third division team Arminia Bielefeld.
Instead of celebrating the title win with his teammates in Stuttgart immediately after the final whistle, the professional player, who is now under contract with Newcastle United in England, went first to the losing Bielefeld team and gave them words of encouragement.
Football “also lives on respect, decency and fairness”
“Football thrives on emotion, but also on respect, decency and fairness,” said DFB Vice President Ronny Zimmermann on the sidelines of national team training in Wolfsburg. Gestures like the striker’s are “what differentiates our sport and makes it more than just a game,” explains Zimmermann.
In Lower Saxony, the DFB selection is preparing for Friday’s World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg and three days later against Slovakia. Apart from Woltemade, coach Ervin Fetahovic from SG Markgräflerland South Baden also received an award. He received the Fair Play Medal for his fair behavior during youth games.
