Several series of explosions occurred in the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday morning, according to AFP journalists, after an air alert was triggered across the country. “There is a missile threat all over Ukraine,” the air force warned via Telegram, and the head of Kiev’s military administration, Timur Tkachenko, reported a ballistic missile threat.

“Shah’s drones and enemy cruise missiles are in the air. There is also the threat of ballistic missile launches and (missile) Kinjal,” the official added. Air defenses were triggered and “hit enemy targets,” he said, asking residents to stay in shelters.

AFP journalists heard several series of explosions and drones, while several missiles were shot down in the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said water and energy distribution was disrupted in the capital.

Monday night’s Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, in the east of the country, has left four people dead and 17 others injured. Russia has targeted the country almost daily using drones or missiles since it began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Energy infrastructure has been a major target, raising fears of a severe winter in Ukraine. Kyiv, for its part, regularly targets oil depots and refineries and other installations on the Russian side.

Ukrainian, American and European officials met in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss the Trump administration’s plans to end the conflict in Ukraine. An initial version of the document aroused opposition from Kiev and its European allies.

While Ukrainian leaders welcomed Monday’s progress, they also felt that “much more” was needed to achieve “real peace” with Russia.
