Mobility study: Study: Almost every second car is not used every day

Cars are Germany’s most important means of transport – but they often go unused. On average, car use is decreasing every day, as shown by the study “Mobility in Germany” carried out by the Federal Ministry of Transport. Based on this, almost half of the cars are not moving on an average day – in 2008 only a third of cars were not moving during the day.

Further results: Pedestrian traffic becomes more important. According to research, electric cars are almost no different from gasoline vehicles in terms of usage patterns, annual mileage, and individual route length per trip. Previous studies in 2017 showed that electric cars were widely used for short distances. Currently, the proportion of longer distances is 13 percent, almost the same as the distance traveled by combustion vehicles.

According to the ministry, the research is based on a national survey of households in more than 1,000 towns and cities regarding their daily traffic behavior. Between May 2023 and June 2024, more than 218,000 households and approximately 421,000 people were surveyed. Research was conducted in 2002, 2008 and 2017.
