Rome, November 26 (Adnkronos) – The location is suggestive: the Sala della Contrada di Voltaia, an ancient crypt in the medieval walls of Montepulciano. But the three-day event hosted by the Democratic majority will not be held there. Increasing membership (over 600) and the room is too small. Everything was moved outdoors, despite the heat. The tensile (heated) structure is currently being assembled in the city’s public park in the province of Siena, Poggiofanti park. The initiative was organized by regional dem supporters Elly Schlein or Dario Franceschini in congress, leftist Andrea Orlando and former art.1 such as Nico Stumpo. Many guests from Maurizio Landini and Pierpaolo Bombardieri, to Andrea Cbird for CISL and for Confindustria vice president Maurizio Marchesini. ANCI President and Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, will also be there. Schlein closed his work.
‘Building alternatives’, the title of the event. “With the closing of the regional elections, the preparation stage for political elections begins. The date chosen is not arbitrary,” said one of the organizers. According to Giuseppe Conte there is no need to rush considering that for 5 Star we have to talk about it after the summer. “Patience is needed – commented Alessandro Alfieri – in terms of coalition building. In fact in Parliament we have worked on many joint proposals starting from the budget amendments that we presented together.” And in any case, if Conte opens the construction site for the 5 Star program, before sitting down at the coalition table, even among the Democratic Party there will need to be discussions. Orlando also said so today: “I don’t know in what form but I think we need time to talk, develop programs, discuss among ourselves, but above all with citizens also keeping in mind the data on abstention, also because the picture has changed since we elected Elly”.
Congressional options remain in the background. Yesterday Schlein froze the matter. “It’s not a priority.” But in Transatlantic, there are those who do not rule out the possibility that the secretary, thanks to his success in the regional elections, is tempted to bring forward the meeting (his mandate will end in early 2027, just before the elections) to strengthen his leadership. “Schlein is already strong in the party, he doesn’t need it. Holding a congress that according to the law will last at least 3 months, at this stage, makes no sense. Even if it starts in mid-January, it will end in spring…”, the Council reasoned. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s national session should be held before Christmas. The official call has not yet arrived, but we are talking about Saturday 13 December.
While waiting for the definitive program, Montepulciano organizers today provided further details about the three days in Tuscany. Opening on Friday 28 November: Gianrico Carofiglio will give a lesson on ‘Words for civil resistance’ and there will also be a speech from the Mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore. On Saturday 29th we will start with a panel dedicated to the justice referendum with Guido Raimondi, judge of the Court of Cassation and former President of the European Court of Human Rights, and Edmondo Bruti Liberati, former Prosecutor General of Milan. Meanwhile Nathalie Tocci, director of the Institute of International Relations, and ambassadors Enzo De Luca and Pasquale Ferrara will be called to discuss, among other things, the task of being ‘progressive in global chaos’.
On Saturday afternoon, at the debate on growth, Italian decline and inequality, speeches are expected from Simone Gamberini, president of Legacoop, Maurizio Landini, secretary general of CGIL, Pierpaolo Bombardieri, secretary general of Uil, Andrea Cbird, secretary of the CISL confederation, Maurizio Marchesini, vice president of Confindustria, Walter Massa, president of Arci, Emiliano Manfredonia, president of Aclli, Filippo Anelli, president of the Order of Doctors. Following Gaetano Manfredi’s speech.
The debate will then continue with a panel on ‘Forms of Participation, New Democratic Party’ which will be attended by the Regional, Provincial and Regional Secretaries of the Democratic Party. Historian Michela Ponzani concludes with ‘Beyond the borders, a homeland called the Republic’. Sunday morning will be the moment most dedicated to politics with speeches from the organizers of the three days, the leaders of the Chamber, the Senate and on Europe, concluding at 12.30 with Schlein’s conclusions. At first the secretary didn’t really like the event, immediately changing the name to the birth of the ‘current’ Democratic Party majority. “How to condition it”, reading some of his works. It is said that distrust was resolved thanks to the work of Igor Taruffi’s ‘bridgeman’. And now, after successful regional elections that gave a boost to the dem leadership, some observers consider Montepulciano ‘weakening’. “But as weak as it is, this initiative has never gone against the secretary”, interrupted one of the organizers.
