More than 600 babies will be victims of sexual violence by 2024, report says

The Inter-Ministerial Mission for the Protection of Women (Miprof) on Thursday, November 20 published figures for victims of violence against minors in 2024.

More than 600 babies were treated in medical-judicial units (UMJ) in 2024 due to acts of sexual violence, according to data published this Thursday by the Inter-Ministerial Mission for the Protection of Women (Miprof). “614 children aged 0 to 2 years were admitted for acts of sexual violence, or 2% of all victims” admitted to these units, according to Miprof, which cited data from the Ministry of Health.

The issue of sexual violence perpetrated against babies and very young children has reappeared in the news in recent months.

In July, a childminder from a kindergarten in Vic-la-Gardiole (Hérault) was charged and imprisoned as part of an investigation into the rape and sexual abuse of nine children aged 3 to 4 years.

In August, a nurse and her former friend were charged as part of an investigation into the sexual abuse of babies at the Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis) hospital.

160,000 minors are victims of sexual violence

According to the Independent Commission on Incest and Sexual Violence (Ciivise), around 160,000 minors are victims of sexual violence every year in France.

For 22% of victims, or nearly a quarter of those situations, the first rape or sexual assault began between birth and age 5, according to Ciivise.
