Mixed results. The Ministry of Education on Thursday, November 20 published the results of national assessments taken in September at schools, middle schools and high schools. The results show “a form of stability compared to 2024”in French as in mathematics, “but there is no significant progress this year”the ministry’s reaction during the press conference. More than seven million students took the assessments in French and mathematics this year, which have been implemented since 2017. The assessments currently cover all primary school levels, as well as grades 6, 5, 4, second and first year of CAP.
However, the results vary at each level. In CP, the results show a “progress” compared to the first evaluation in 2019, with “a stronger foundation in reading and arithmetic”underlined the ministry in a press release. In CE1, the result is “generally stable” more than a year, but with “a decline in French that requires increased vigilance”. In CE2, the scoring is too “generally stable” in French and “stable or increasing” in mathematics. In CM1, results were stationary in French and progressed in mathematics, and in CM2, they were stable but with “advances in grammar and numbering”.
In secondary school, the results in grade 6 experience “continuous improvement” since carrying out the evaluation in 2017. The Ministry also noted a clear improvement in performance “fluency test” (which measures reading speed). The results were less encouraging in class 5, which was assessed this year. They reveal “strong disparity”. This gap is also significant in mathematics. Grade 4 elementary school shows stable mathematics achievement, but has experienced a decline “worrying” in French. Second, the situation is also the same “contrast”with “moderate progress in mathematics” But “a drop in French”.
