In the case of the Hamburg family who died in Istanbul, the hotel became the focus of the investigation. One room was said to have recently been treated with pesticides. Other tourists complained of symptoms of poisoning.
Following the deaths of three tourists in Türkiye who had traveled from Germany, the hotel in Istanbul where the family was staying was evacuated. All the guests were taken to other hotels, the “Birgun” newspaper reported. It is not yet known how many people are affected. Previously, two other hotel guests experienced the same symptoms as the sick family. They were rushed to hospital because of nausea and vomiting.
According to the “Hürriyet” report, investigators discovered that a room in the hotel had recently been treated with pesticides. A hotel employee and two pest controllers were arrested. There have now been a total of seven arrests in connection with the deaths.
According to police, the victims were a Turkish family living in Germany. He came to Istanbul for a holiday in the metropolis. The parents and their children, aged three and six, fell ill on Wednesday after eating several popular street food dishes in the seaside district of Ortaköy at the foot of the bridge over the Bosphorus. The family was taken to hospital – but the doctors could do nothing more for the children and then also the mother. The father should still be in the hospital.
Four suspects were arrested on Friday. According to state broadcaster TRT, it is about sellers of sweets, shells and dishes made from veal intestines (kokorec). They were accused of negligent homicide, Anadolu reported. Therefore, all suspects had prior convictions for other crimes. Authorities closed the shop where the Hamburg family was said to have eaten.
