Several days earlier, heavy rain poured down the area. The village of Quirin near the Slovenian border was particularly hard hit: three houses were buried in mud on Monday evening and were swept away. Based on investigations so far, the German citizen and his wife are actually safe.
But apparently he returned again to save his 83-year-old neighbor, Guerrina S. from the disaster, as written by the Italian portal Corriere della Sera, among others. “He threw himself into the mud to save the old woman because it was in his nature: he was generous and loved the village.”said a neighbor. While trying to help, the 32 year old man was again trapped in a landslide.

“The whole village held its breath”: Quirin K. died trying to save his neighbor
For hours, villagers hoped that Quirin could still be saved. “The whole village is holding its breath,” a man at the scene explained to Italian news portal Il Messaggero. ““It doesn’t surprise me that he made such a selfless effort to save the old woman who lived next door.” he added. “That’s his nature.”
But there was a sad certainty: rescue workers found the emigrant’s body. Any help also came too late for the 83-year-old neighbor. Firefighters could only evacuate the bodies from inside the house which was covered in mud. All of Italy is now mourning and calling Quirin a “hero,” Il Messaggero reported, among others.
The situation in Brazzano di Cormons and northern Italy remains serious. “I have ordered schools to close todayMayor Roberto Falcaro said on social media on Monday. “Given the traffic situation and the associated risks, we are all working hard to handle the situation as best as possible.”
