In his new home in Morelia (Mexico), little Oliver Staub struggles to get back to life after a fatal car accident. The appointment at the local CRIT rehabilitation center was actually just to care for the paralyzed boy. However, during the doctor’s examination, suddenly there was good news that the family did not expect.
New diagnosis for little Oliver Staub: “We were told he would never move again”
Examination results: Olli’s paralysis is weaker than expected! Therefore, it has good conditions to regenerate. “Doctors said Oliver had an incomplete spinal cord injury,” said Stefan Staub in an RTL interview. This new diagnosis is a huge burden on the family’s hearts. Because: After a devastating car accident on Maundy Thursday (April 17) on his dream vacation in Mexico, doctors said the boy’s entire spinal cord was severed.

What are the prospects for the little fighter now? “That’s very promising,” Stefan’s father said happily about the new assessment. “With a two-year-old, anything is possible.”

Stefan Staub continues: “We were told that he would never move again. We were told that he was dying. We now have hope that Oliver will be able to walk again someday. So not tomorrow, not the day after. But in four or five years there is also a time when he will only be seven. And we will do everything we can to achieve that.”
How well Olli ultimately recovers is a matter of time. Ultimately, will he be able to move one arm to operate his wheelchair and regain his independence? Or will he be able to get up, run, and run someday? “Of course it was just a dream,” said Stefan Staub. “And we’re living it now.”

Surgery and stem cell therapy: Oliver Staub’s (2) journey back to life after a horror accident in Mexico
In the past six months, Olli has experienced incredible progress – starting with surgery in Chicago with neurosurgeon and spinal cord researcher Dr. Mohamad Bydon. And now the Staub family can take the next step and intensify Oliver’s therapy. The main goal: the boy’s muscles become stronger. Special equipment helped: especially a specially made chair so that Olli could stand back up thanks to straps and supports. The boy is currently doing this twice a day, and the duration is getting longer each day.

With training like this, Olli’s recovery is far from perfect: In early summer, the two-year-old will receive experimental stem cell therapy — and will return to the US for a few weeks with Dr. Bydon. This could be a potentially breakthrough treatment!
However, the Staub family did not give up. Pastor Stefan summed it up: “We all live by hope.”
