Now repaired, the boat that crashed into a bridge in New York has been returned to Mexico

The sailboat that collided with the New York Brooklyn Bridge in May returned to Mexico on Sunday for an official event, six months after the fatal collision. The top of the mast of the Cuauhtémoc, a 48.2-meter training ship, broke off the famous bridge deck in full view of passers-by on the banks of the East River on May 17. Two sailors were killed and about twenty people were injured. According to the American investigation, the boat was moving backwards while cruising at the time of the accident.

The building reappeared in its native country on the occasion of the “Consolidation of Mexican Independence at Sea”, a celebration marking the surrender of Spain to Mexican forces at Fort San Juan de Ulua, Veracruz, in 1825.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, on deck, paid tribute to the two victims, U.S. Navy cadets Yamilet Sanchez and Adal Jair Maldonado, ages 20 and 23.
