On his 77th birthday
King Charles braved the Welsh rain
The rain that fell on his birthday didn’t bother King Charles: the king was in good spirits in Wales.
Despite heavy rain and gray skies, King Charles III. completed his visit to South Wales on Friday as planned – and also celebrated his 77th birthday there. Together with his wife Queen Camilla (78), the king visited Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil, where many residents braved the storm.
This historic site, one of the most important buildings in Welsh history, celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. Charles and Camilla started their day there, weather-beaten and elegantly dressed: Camilla appeared in a royal blue coat dress with a diamond leek brooch – the national symbol of Wales – while Charles opted for a camel coat over a gray suit.
At a subsequent community reception, the royals met with prominent Welsh guests, including “Gavin & Stacey” star Ruth Jones, TikTok creator Lewis Leigh, reality TV personality Liam Reardon and fashion designer Julien Macdonald. Representatives from some of the royal couple’s patronages and local companies were also present.
Before going to elementary school, Charles received a special birthday surprise: the king was allowed to cut a birthday cake lovingly designed in the shape of a castle. As a sign of farewell, the king and queen were given a warm welcome by the crowd. And even the constant downpour couldn’t stop Charles from shaking hands and with people during his short tour
