The 4-2 win at Straubing seemed a flash in the pan for Eisbären. The reason is, Berlin lost again with a score of 2:5 against the new DEL leaders. The problem: They missed the first two thirds and only played good ice hockey at the end.

Currently, Eisbären slipped from the outright playoff rankings (rising to sixth place).

Big mistakes from Veilleux and goalkeeper Stettmer gave Barber an early 0:1 lead (5th). Already the league’s top scorer’s 20th goal.

And goalkeeper Stettmer also made a mistake as Keating made it 0-2 (21). The Polar Bears were sluggish, still weak on the power play and capitalizing on few scoring opportunities. Only Kirk brought normal form on the ice.

Usually 0:3 (37th). Krauß overtook an overwhelmed Lancaster (a mistake buy from Munich!) and with one of the Ingolstadt side’s many counter-attacks, Agostino sealed the early decision. How careless can you be when it comes to defense? They didn’t work hard enough up front and dangerous counter-attacks occurred in return.

Things to note: The puck is shot at the opponent’s net too rarely and the Polar Bears get caught up in a lot of individual action. However, ice hockey requires combination; as we all know, this is a team sport.

Only in the final third did the Berlin team come back and, thanks to Byron (42) and Kirk (50), Berlin’s best players, took a 2:3 lead. But when coach Serge Aubin took the goalie off the ice for the sixth fielder (late?), Abbandonato (59) and Breton (60) scored into Eisbären’s empty net to make the final score 2:5.

Eisbären captain Jonas Müller on MagentaSport: “We should have played like we did in the third third from the start.”

In the basement duel, Dresdner Eislöwen was clearly defeated by Iserlohn Roosters 1:6 in their home match. Saxons are still at the bottom of the league and have to worry about relegation.
