Piadina Romagnola PGI, dispute won in France – In short

(ANSA) FORLI, 17 NOV – New success for the PGI Piadina Romagnola Promotion and Protection Consortium, which is committed to defending Romagna’s symbolic products internationally. This time the victory came in France, where a Swiss company had registered the brand ‘Piadina’ several years ago. The consortium opposed the registration, arguing that the term was generic and could not be registered as a trademark. After lengthy disputes, the National Institute of Industrial Property in Paris accepted the appeal. In fact, the Consortium – as president Alfio Biagini underlined with great satisfaction – managed to demonstrate through detailed market research that today in France, unlike in the past, the word “piadina” actually identifies piadina.

Therefore, the registration and use of the ‘Piadina’ mark on French territory by a Swiss company, apart from being in conflict with the registration of the PGI Piadina Romagnola fraction, would also deceive and cause disorientation among consumers.

The dispute won in France is a new step in the protection activities of the Consortium, which is already involved in Brazil, Canada, the UK and Japan to combat inappropriate use of the Piadina name. A continuous work that strengthens the identity and protection of “Romagna bread” on the international market.
