Communist Jeannette Jara narrowly wins the first round of presidential elections in Chile. But he had to advance to the second round with right-wing politician José Antonio Kast. And Kast can count on support there.

Jeannette Jara of the Communist Party and right-wing politician José Antonio Kast will face off in the second round of Chile’s presidential election next month. Jara got nearly 27 percent, as announced by the election office after counting almost all the votes. German-born right-wing politician José Antonio Kast received 24 percent of the vote.

Candidate Jeannette Jara is ahead in Chile’s election – but will have to advance to the second round

Incumbent President Gabriel Boric, who cannot seek re-election for constitutional reasons, congratulated the winners of the first round. “In a democracy, candidates who wish to represent citizens at the local and regional level must be public officials who are honest, have integrity and serve.”

Jara thanked his voters and spoke of a “great country.” The second round of elections is scheduled for December 14. Pollsters see Kast as benefiting. Because they expect conservative forces to support the founding right-wing Republican Party and help him win. Libertarian Congressman Johannes Kaiser has announced his support for Kast.

Compulsory voting in Chile

The election campaign was marked by voter concerns about crime and immigration. Kast is counting on tough measures in his election program. A total of eight candidates applied for the presidential seat. Unlike previous elections, voting is mandatory for the 15.7 million registered voters. Part of parliament was also re-elected.

If the far-right wins the presidency and control of both houses of Congress, it would be the first time since the end of Pinochet’s dictatorship in 1990.
