Federal Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) has set up an independent expert commission to develop proposals for stronger protections for prostitutes in the coming months. Although forced prostitution and human trafficking are still punishable in Germany and the law was intended to guarantee better protection and better working conditions for prostitutes, critics see the legislation as a failure.

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU) recently supported stricter regulations aimed at women’s rights. “I firmly believe that we must eventually ban prostitution and the purchase of sex in this country,” Klöckner said. The law does not do enough to protect prostitutes. There will still be massive attacks, male superiority, and unintentional behavior. Klöckner described Germany as “the brothel of Europe.”

According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, there were around 32,300 registered prostitutes in Germany last year. However, the actual number may be much higher.
