Public excluded: Trial of knife attack at main train station begins on Tuesday

About six months after a knife attack that caused multiple injuries at Hamburg Central Station, the trial of the alleged perpetrator will begin in a regional court. The start of the so-called security process is scheduled to take place on Tuesday before the grand criminal chamber of the regional court, as announced by the public prosecutor.

Authorities have requested that the defendant be placed in a psychiatric hospital. This 39 year old man suffers from paranoid schizophrenia which results in a misunderstanding of reality. According to a court spokesman, the trial will be held behind closed doors.

According to investigations, the 39-year-old man is said to have used a paring knife to randomly stab tourists and passers-by with a vegetable knife on May 23 “in an incapacitated state” in a busy main railway line area. train lines 13 and 14 to kill them. According to previous reports, three women aged 24, 52 and 85 and a 24-year-old man were seriously injured.

Attempted murder in 21 cases

In total, according to the statement, prosecutors charged the women with, among other things, attempted murder in 21 cases, 15 of which involved acts of severe physical abuse. Although six people managed to avoid being stabbed, 15 victims suffered cuts or stab wounds, some of them seriously, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Attacked father with scissors

In January, the 39-year-old man is said to have tried to kill his then-69-year-old father with scissors in Großhansdorf (Stormarn district), north-east of Hamburg. But it failed because the 71 year old mother intervened and took the scissors from his hand. However, the father suffered injuries to the shoulder and upper arm area.

According to the Lübeck prosecutor’s office, there were already indications of mental illness in the woman. However, the Lübeck district court rejected the accommodation, and an appeal against the decision was rejected by the Lübeck regional court.

Attacks on children and fellow patients

In February, the woman is said to have assaulted a child on a playground at Hamburg Airport and, after being admitted to a psychiatric clinic, attacked a fellow patient. After his release, he was hospitalized again for three weeks at the end of May, explained a spokesperson for the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health.

The day before the knife attack at Hamburg Central Station, the 39-year-old had been released from a psychiatric hospital in the Cuxhaven district. According to the clinic, there were no medical findings at that time to justify further accommodation.
