Rehabilitation of the Mont Blanc tunnel must begin but could take up to… 17 years

A deafening sound rumbled in the depths of Mont Blanc. From September 1 to December 12, the famous tunnel connecting the Chamonix valley (Haute-Savoie) to Italy’s Val d’Aosta is under a renovation project. Machines and workers work tirelessly in this thin, 11.6 km long tunnel, separated from the high snow-capped peaks by almost 3 km of granite rock.

The challenge is huge. Inaugurated with great fanfare in 1965 by President Charles de Gaulle and Italian President Giuseppe Saragat, by the time it established itself as the longest tunnel in the world, the Mont Blanc tunnel was now old.
