Animal rights activist killed by one of his deer: cause unclear
The 64-year-old man is considered a tireless advocate for injured wild animals in his area. Her years working as a private caretaker began in 2013 after she witnessed an accident in the wild: a deer was hit on a country road, leaving the fawn distraught and disoriented. P. takes the animal home, names it “Wheezer” and raises it like a foster child.
When authorities later stepped in and threatened to kill Wheezer because he wasn’t officially allowed to be kept, P. didn’t hesitate for long. He founded a deer rehabilitation center to legally continue his project. As time went by, their property became a kind of sanctuary for orphaned and injured animals that would otherwise have little chance of surviving.
Personal animal shelter: Personal enclosures and emotional relationships
Over the years, not only has the number of deer he keeps increased, but his emotional attachment has grown as well. Many animals are shy or traumatized. P. is often the only person they trust. The site eventually covered five hectares of land, equipped with pens, feeding areas and recovery areas.
According to the British Independent, it is still unclear what actually happened on November 15th. But what is certain is that one of the deer suddenly became unpredictable and injured P. His family reported it to the police.
4 facts about deer
Deer also make up a small portion of the country’s wild animal population; according to the German Nature Conservation Association, the following four things characterize animals:
- Size and weight: Red deer are the largest wild mammal in Germany; An adult deer can weigh up to 250 kilograms and reach a shoulder height of 1.50 meters.
- Horn regeneration: The antlers fall off completely and new ones form every year; the growth process only takes about 120 days and is one of the fastest growing organs in the animal world.
- Habitual behavior: During the mating season in September/October, deer make their characteristic loud roar, which can be heard up to 3 kilometers away and is used to determine territory and attract females.
- Inventory comparison: Although roe deer are smaller, they are much more common: around 2.5 million deer live in Germany, while the red deer population is only around 200,000.
