Double accident for Matteo Richetti, Action MP, when in recent days he traveled with secretary Carlo Calenda: first his suitcase was stolen on the train and then, after arriving at the station in Rome, someone tried to steal another suitcase by opening the door of the van in which the two were traveling. Calenda himself said that today he was in Bologna to take part in a public debate. In Italy “there is a surge in petty crime, which is partly to blame on this Government, which claims to be ‘fighting against crime'”, said Calenda when asked by the press on the topic of security. Hence Richetti’s account of the episode: “First, they stole his suitcase on the train. When we arrived, they opened it from the back of the van we were traveling in and one of them stole Richetti’s suitcase, poor thing. Luckily the driver stopped him. And the Carabinieri said to me: ‘We didn’t catch them anymore, what did we arrest them for?’ People who try to commit theft, Action’s secretary always explains, “have an expulsion order and show it to the Carabinieri. They said: ‘Look, we can even take him back and you can also make a report, we will give him another eviction order and that’s it’. But it can’t be like that. Instead of setting up repatriation centers in Albania, let’s create repatriation centers in every region of Italy and make sure they work, so that people can be sent home. The people affected by petty crimes are those who are weakest, not those who are stronger.”
